Mike and Mary

Before we left for home, we found a small Ethiopian market, Vision Cafe deep in San Diego. We met and made friends with Mike, the owner, and his daughter Mary and shared coffee and tea. All of the Ethiopian partons at the market were very curious and very welcoming.

After SeaWorld, we spent almost two full days enjoying San Diego, Seaport Village and Balboa Park in particular.

We decided to get away from the heat of Tucson for a couple of days before the summer ended for me and teachers had to report back for the looming school year. So we went to southern California and spent our first day at SeaWorld San Diego.
Disneyland, Day 2

We arrived a little later at the park our second day than we had the first. The kids made it to midnight the evening before, but they had a good nap in the afternoon. I decided that we shouldn’t return to the hotel on day two; rather, we’d maximize our fun time by eating in the park and napping Debabu and Zufan on our laps if they needed. This turned out not to be the best idea as I learned later in the afternoon, but the day started out well enough, as evidenced in the photo below after the kids got their mouse ears.
Disneyland, Day 1

We walked through the right entrance portal of Disneyland Sunday morning after the previous day’s travel from Tucson to Anaheim. I don’t think Debabu or Zufan thought anything different than they should have at coming to any new place. Main Street, USA is tame, nothing unexpected for kids who really have nothing to expect. Things got exciting when we approached Sleeping Beauty Castle, though, and then the fun and noise of Fantasyland took over once we crossed the castle portal. We traipsed around the park with a vague idea of what we wanted to see and do (not the way my family did it when I was a little boy), but eventually the kids met Mickey Mouse, dressed up for the Halloween season. Zufan isn’t scared here, just trying to keep her balance.

After soaking our feet in the Pacific on our trip to Disneyland, we sat down for some delicious fish and chips at the Harbor Fish Cafe, just at the top of the beach. I had to take a shot of my dinner. Brother.
Carlsbad State Beach

We’d planned on enjoying the fall break Amphitheater School District calendars in October between the first and second quarters with a trip to Disneyland. Before we arrived in Anaheim though, we stopped at the Carlsbad State Beach, my favorite place when I lived in California with my family in the early 80s. It was the kids’ first time experiencing the ocean. Zufan, typically courageous, couldn’t get enough of the waves and would’ve run into the surf if Rebecca hadn’t stopped her. Debabu, typically timid, had enough of the water before he stepped foot on the sand (about which he was also skeptical).
European Showcase

I had the pleasure of leading some of my excellent Dorados through Europe for three weeks, from the end of May to mid-June. We began in London and finished in Athens; in between we spent time in Paris, France; Lucerne, Switzerland; Florence, Rome, and Sorrento, Italy; and Meteora and Delphi Greece. We also cruised the Aegean Sea and enjoyed ports-of-call at the Greek islands of Mykonos, Patmos, Santorini, and Crete, and Kusadasi, Turkey. Here’s Conor, Trevor, Tony, Chloe, Joelle, Casey, Tara, Lacy, and Michael, or Team AZ, in St. James Park, London, the afternoon of our arrival. The London Eye is in the background.
