The Great Gary Gygax!

One of my students recently asked what my favorite sport is. “Dungeons and Dragons”, I told him, and everyone giggled. I was thinking of the passing of E. Gary Gygax, one of the creators of that game that I learned to play when I was twelve and around which formed one of a core group of associates during my adolescence: John, Russell, Chris, Jimmy, and Eric.
Wired had been preparing a piece that turned into an appreciation, “Dungeon Master: The Life and Legacy of Gary Gygax”. I still play with Eric and Jim. That’s right. And we’d would play with Russell if he’d just make his stupid character already character. Chris is somewhere in Tucson, and John is hanging out with a new group of friends.
